1 Coir Fibre
The cocoanut when taken from the tree has a thick fibrous covering, varying from 3-in. to 6 in. in thickness. The kernel is extracted, and the husk is retted to obtain the fibres. The retting is done by keeping the husks under water for several months. This retting dissolves the gum which binds the fibres together and leaves the fibres soft and pliable. In the Anjengo district the retting is done in brackish water which gives a better fibre than when done in fresh water. For this reason Anjengo yarn is claimed as of better quality. The yarns spun from the coir fibre are generally hand produced. The fibre is a reddish brown colour, up to 10 in long, and occurs in the form of large stiff and very elastic filaments, each filament being round smooth and somewhat like horse hair It possesses remarkable tenacity and curls easily. The fibre is used in the South Seas instead of oakum for caulking boats and vessels and it is claimed that it will never rot. Coir fibre is principally used for making mats, cordage, rugs and carpets. About 1 lb of fibre is obtained from six cocoanuts (see Coir Yarn and Kogalla Yarn) -
2 Palma Pita Fibre
A variety of istle or tampico fibre, grown in Mexico. The Palma istle fibre is 15 -in. to 35-in. long, usually coarse and stiff, yellow in colour, and gummy. It is used for cheap ropes and cords. -
3 Piassaba Fibre
A brown, stiff and wiry fibre from the leaf stalks of the monkey bast tree in Brazil. It is used for brooms and coarse ropes. Coarse cables are made from this fibre and these are very durable and so light that they float on the water. Yielded by two palms, Attalea Funifera and Leopodinia Piassaba. -
4 Salopa Fibre
The native trade term for a very stiff, tough and elastic fibre from the stems of the coconut and palmyra palm trees in India and Burma. Used locally for coarse ropes. In 1887 an English firm attempted to use the fibre as a substitute for whalebone in corsets. -
5 Bassine Fibre
A palm tree native of East India, gives this fibre, the leaves are about 2 feet long and the fibres obtained from them are stiff, wiry and thin; used for brushes. The natives make hats and umbrellas from the leaves. -

11 Manila Hemp
ABACA, or MANILA HEMPA fibre obtained from the leaf stalks of the "musa textilis", a plant in the Philippine Islands, Sumatra, Java and Borneo. It is strong, has great durability, varies from 40-in. to 140-in. in length, yellowish-white in colour, and has a lustrous appearance. It is light, but rather stiff in handle. The yield of the fibre is only about 11/2 per cent of the weight of the green leaves. In India the inner fibres of the leaf stalk are much used for making fine cloths, the outer and coarser fibres being used in the manufacture of matting for floor covering, cordage, canvas, etc. The fibre (fine quality) is also used as weft in some fabrics for upholstery, chiefly on account of its colour and lustre. There are many grades, ranging from fine to coarse, obtained from these several species of banana and pineapple plants. Manila hats are made from these fibres. The fibres are tied end to end and woven without being spun into yarns. It is a tall plant, growing from 16 to 22 feet, and has a stem up to 12-in. diameter. This is one of the most important fibres cultivated in the tropics. Although called Manila Hemp it is quite unlike true hemp. Others names are "Cebu Hemp" and "Davao Hemp" (see textile fibres) ———————— See Abaca. The fibre obtained from the Musa textilis, a variety of plantain, a native of the Philippine Islands where it is known as abaca. -
